Description
This double-leaved wax writing tablet is crafted from a pair of wooden halves bound together with leather cord and fitted on the inside with panels of wax. Included is a brass stylus with which to inscribe your message; the flat, broad end can be used to flatten the wax to erase your inscription. In the Classical and Medieval world these double-leaved ”diptych” wax tablets had a variety of uses; scribes would use them to write a rough draft of their text before copying it to onto the expensive papyrus scroll. They were also a handy, writable work space for working out math problems or keeping an inventory. Many such tablets have been found around Hadrian’s Wall and were invaluable to the Roman garrison for keeping records of supplies, manpower and other logistics. Dimensions: 6 13/16” x 4” x 1 1/4”
